Reflective Essay

     Over my many years at ACLC I have learned many life-long skills. Coming from Wood Middle School, I didn’t know much about ACLC at all. I came knowing I only had about three friends here, and I was quite nervous on my first day. I was really intimidated by all the older learners and the funky schedule I had. I remember getting a tour of the school from Lauren D.C. and getting really excited over all the little things I saw; the DVS room, the lobby, the outback area, and all that fun stuff. After 5 years here I believe I have changed a lot, and for the better, not the worse.

     Since my first week here, I became a lot more friendly and social. At my other schools I would stick with a few people and only talk to them. At ACLC I know the majority of the learner’s names, and what grade they’re in. I talk to almost every senior throughout the week even if it’s just a quick “hello”.

     I have also gained a lot of learning skills and time management. At Wood, it was just pretty much a lesson, homework, test, and then repeat all of that. I didn’t feel like I was learning much because it was such a boring day of school. Here, we do a lot of projects that involve groups. I can’t remember one time at Wood doing a project with another student. At the center, we also create rockets, little races car, and things that keep learners interested, not fall asleep.

     When I came here, I didn’t know much about computers. I took DVS my first year and I learned pretty much everything you need to know about computers. We took videos, uploaded them, and edited them. It took a long time to learn all of that stuff, but it really helped me because if I ever need to use that skill I know how to do it.

     My history class has taught me a lot through out there years because we watch tons of videos which is way more entertaining that just sitting there reading out of a text book. This helped keep me interested a lot because history is my least favorite subject. I have a hard time staying focused on something I really don’t find interesting.

     Ever since I was a kid, I have really enjoyed and succeeded in math. It always seemed to be magnetized to my brain. Everything I learn I can instantly memorize. If there is a simple math problem, I can easily solve it in my head. It is a good skill that I can bring with me anywhere I go. Carlton and Milt have been really good to me because they kept me focused and on track. We also did many fun and interacting projects in class that also help because we get to have fun while we learn.

     Last year in physics, my group and I of three other learners did a project to build a model roller coaster. The marble had to last 15 seconds and make it to the end without falling off the track. I covered time and task management, whole team performance evaluation, individual teamwork, and oral communications. These are a few of the graduation standards that I achieved. 

     Two years ago in Geometry, we did a project on the mass of a human body. We had to measure each body part and do a bunch of equations to figure out the mass of one of our group member’s body mass (it was me). Then, once we did that, the person that got measured in the group had to go into a freezing tub of water and see how much the water level change and so on. This demonstrated democratic leadership, research, personal visioning, and systems thinking.

     In English last year we had to write a reflection on The Good Earth. I achieved reading, and writing. This really helped because I have trouble staying interested in books I'm not interested in.
